Summary
"Nineteen sixty-eight was a pivotal year. As thousands of Vietnamese and Americans were killed in war, students across four continents took over colleges and city streets. Hate-filled assassins murdered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. Young people and Olympic athletes protested in Mexico City. In Prague, protesters tried to fight off invading Soviet tanks with flowers, while in Chicago, they demonstrated to catch the eye of the nightly news. And in China, Red Guards attacked their elders. In those twelve months, generations clashed and the world wobbled on the edge of vast change that was exhilarating and terrifying. Young people found it an exciting time to set off and explore, comedians used humor as a political weapon, and scientists and computer programmers unveiled inventions that would come to define the world we live in now. To capture that tumultuous year, editors Marc Aronson and Susan Campbell Bartoletti, with twelve contributors, have created an anthology that showcases many genres of nonfiction such as memoir, personal essay, narrative, and travel writing. Some contributors use a broad canvas, while others take a close look at a moment; matched essays examine the same experience from different points of view; and Betsy Partridge's prose poem leads us through the year. As we face our own moments of crisis and division, the long view of history can guide us. We've clashed before and found a way forward. In this global thematic anthology, we look back to help map a way ahead."--, Provided by publisher
